Inside out 2 in literature

In which books can I find the same emotions of the movie?

I wrote a post for an Italian blog called Universo Letterario where I explained a bit what is behind this movie and I left some tips for books linked with every emotions, old and new, that you can find in Inside out 2.

This new chapter talks about changing and growing, and it shows us the main character, Riley, in her pre adolescence, one of the most important steps that we meet in our life.

Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust they don’t know how to react when Anxiety shows up and start to take control of everything.

But she is not alone. She brings with her Envy, small but powerful and jealous of what the others have; Ennui, which brings the perfect dose of sarcasm in Riley’s life; Embarrassment, which likes to be in the corner and tries to do this until the end.

Is the puberty so scary?

Inside Out 2 almost perfectly represents the transition from childhood, the land of joy and enthusiasm, to puberty and adolescence, in which there is a widespread sense of inadequacy, the first anxieties, the first worries, the desire to please others, the fear of not making it and the embarrassment of not being up to par.

All this triggers an internal conflict in Riley, and it is there that the girl’s thoughts cannot stop, they go from the classic “I’m a good girl” to the even more classic “I’ll never make it”, up to a of the fundamental scenes of the cartoon: the panic attack, represented in a masterly way, where anxiety takes total control and no one, not even Joy, is able to help her.

So which books can you read?

Auntie Mame by Patrick Dennis and the famous speech of Kurt Vonnegut regarding happiness.

The year of magical thinking by Joan Didion and The crying book by Heather Christie.

It by Stephen King, because this is THE BOOK, and Kill Creek by Thomas Scott.

Two books, both written by Chuck Palahniuk: Fight Club and Rant.

The vegetarian by Han Kang and an Italian book, Le assaggiatrici, by Rossella Postorino.

Silk by Alessandro Baricco, one of the most powerful book he wrote about love, lovers and life.

In praise of Slow by Carl Honoré and My year of rest and relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh.

I am sorry, but for this I think these two Italian books are perfect: Margherita Dolcevita di Stefano Benni e Io e te di Niccoló Ammaniti.

Hope you like these recommendations and enjoy the movie and the books!
